Schulte Brothers Farm of Watkins wins State Fair Herdsman Award

Schulte Bros. of Watkins earned the Herdsman Award on Saturday at the conclusion of the Dairy Cattle show at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. The Herdsman Award recognizes the top exhibitors and ranks them based on the cleanliness of stalls, animals and aisles in the Boulevard of Dairy Breeds as well as the upkeep and sanitation of equipment over the course of the dairy shows.

Benton County farmers earn awards in State Fair Spotted Swine Show

Niehaus and Feldman Genetics of Greene took top honors at the Spotted Swine Show judged Thursday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. The Greene farm was awarded the Champion Boar banner. Champion Gilt honors went to Triggs Show Pigs of Mount Ayr while the Reserve Champion Gilt and Reserve Champion Boar banners went to Joel Olson of Atkins. Olson Spot Farm of Newhall claimed the Premier Exhibitor Award.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Jerez Norwood

Jerez Norwood, from Rocky Mount, N.C., is a member of Maple 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. Jane Hrabak earns honors in State Fair Beginner's Food Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/13/2013)(readMedia)-- Alisa Link of Des Moines earned First Place Overall in the Food Department Beginner's Contest judged Sunday at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Pat Becker of Cumberland won Second Place Overall. Third Place Overall was awarded to Jane M. Hrabak of Belle Plaine. The contest was open to adults competing in the Iowa State Fair Food Department for the first time.

AmeriCorps NCCC members help PTO revitalize Shellsburg playground area

PTO volunteers and AmeriCorps members helped improve the Shellburg play area. By: Rebecca Bigler, Marquesha Barrett and Christian Taylor-Williams For two weekends, members from various NCCC teams joined together to revitalize the playground at Shellsburg Elementary School in Shellsburg, Iowa. Their main goal was to build new playground equipment and improve the aesthetics of the playground to promote a fun atmosphere for the students.
